TERC is a not-for-profit education research and development organization based in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Our mission is to improve mathematics, science, and technology teaching and learning. TERC works at the forefront of current theory and practice to:
• contribute to the understanding of learning and teaching
• create curricula and other products
• design and test exemplary models of professional development
• develop applications of new technologies
• support school reform. equity, and out-of-school learning through research and technical assistance.

TERC emphasizes an innovative, inquiry-based approach to learning by students from every background, searching for ways to include more students in meaningful learning experiences in science and mathematics. While our vision propels us forward, we stay grounded in the realities of today's classrooms by conducting most of our research and development in schools. In 2001, TERC programs and products reached over 1.4 million students in all 50 states and 87 countries.

The unique mission of the Space Science Institute (SSI) is to integrate scientific research with education and public outreach. Our research program includes earth science, space physics, planetary science, and astrophysics. SSI’s National Center for Interactive Learning (NCIL) develops science and technology exhibits for museums, science centers, and libraries; develops educational websites and software interactives; provides professional development for formal and informal educators; and conducts learning research and evaluation for the education community. NCIL programs are aligned with the national education standards in science, math, and technology.

The Jet Propulsion Laboratory, managed by the California Institute of Technology, is NASA's lead center for robotic exploration of the solar system. Our spacecraft have visited all the planets in our solar system except Pluto. JPL telescopes are observing distant galaxies in the universe to study how our solar system was formed. We also manage the worldwide Deep Space Network, which communicates with spacecraft and conducts scientific investigations. JPL cameras and sensors are aboard satellites circling Earth to study the ozone, oceans, and other Earth sciences. To support our continued exploration, JPL is making advances in technology with new instruments and computer programs to help our spaceships travel further and our telescopes see farther than ever before.

The National Science Foundation’s Division of Informal Science Education (ISE) promotes public interest, understanding, and engagement in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics through voluntary, self-directed, and lifelong learning opportunities. The ISE program supports a variety of projects, including:
• Television programs, films, and radio shows
• Exhibits and educational programs at museums, science and technology centers, aquaria, nature centers, zoos, and libraries
• Educational programs and activities through community and youth-based programs

University Corporation for Atmospheric Research

The University Corporation for Atmospheric Research is a consortium of universities dedicated to education and research to enrich our understanding of the earth system. Under primary sponsorship from the National Science Foundation, UCAR manages the National Center for Atmospheric Research
(NCAR) and the UCAR Office of Programs to extend the universities'capabilities with collaborative research, community services, and tools. NCAR's Scientific Computing Division and Web Engineering Group provide mirror site hosting for MarsQuest Online.

San Diego Supercomputer Center

The San Diego Supercomputer Center's (SDSC) mission is to innovate,
develop and deploy technology to advance science. SDSC is involved in
an extensive set of collaborations and activities at the intersection
of technology and science whose purpose is to enable and facilitate the
next generation of scientific advances. Founded in 1985 and primarily
funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), SDSC is an organized
research unit of the University of California, San Diego. With a staff
of more than 400 scientists, software developers and support
personnel, SDSC is an international leader in data management, biosciences,
geosciences, grid computing and visualization. For more information,

The Digital Library for Earth System Education (DLESE) is a grassroots community effort involving educators, students, and scientists working together to improve the quality, quantity, and efficiency of teaching and learning about the Earth system at all levels.

DLESE supports Earth system science education by providing:

  • Access to high-quality collections of educational resources
  • Access to Earth data sets and imagery, including the tools and interfaces that enable their effective use in educational settings
  • Support services to help educators and learners effectively create, use, and share educational resources
  • Communication networks to facilitate interactions and collaborations across all dimensions of Earth system education

DLESE resources include electronic materials for both teachers and learners, such as lesson plans, maps, images, data sets, visualizations, assessment activities, curriculum, online courses, and much more. Sponsored by the National Science Foundation, DLESE is being designed, built, and governed by community members from around the country.
